Moose Vs Motorcylist

(LAURENTIAN HILLS TWP., ON.) – The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a a collision on highway #17 between Petawawa and Chalk River that forced the highway shut down in both directions.

A motorcyclist collided with a moose. The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital and Ornge airlifted the injured party to a local Ottawa hospital. The highway has now reopened in both directions.

Fire Hydrant Vs Vehicle Collision – One Arrested

(LAURENTIAN HILLS, ON) – A single-vehicle collision in the municipality of Laurentian Hills has resulted in charges being laid against the driver. 

On May 9, 2025, at approximately 11:15 p.m., members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision on Main Street in Chalk River. Investigation found the vehicle left the roadway, entered the ditch and struck a fire hydrant. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital by Renfrew County Paramedics. As part of the investigation a Roadside Screening Device was utilized, and further testing was conducted.

    As a result of this incident 29-year-old Dakota FRECH-ASSIGINACK is charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) and Highway Traffic Act (HTA) offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80mg plus
  • Careless driving
  • Possess more than one licence

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on June 10, 2025.

One Dead – Dylan Shane ROBERTS Arrested

(LAURENTIAN HILLS, ON) – The driver of a side-by-side Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) involved in a fatal collision in March 2024 has been arrested and charged. 

On March 24, 2024, at approximately 12:44 a.m., police were called to a single vehicle UTV collision on Pergeon Lake Road in Laurentian Hills. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the UTV and taken to hospital by ambulance. The 22-year-old passenger from Eganville was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A Canada-Wide warrant was issued for the arrest of the driver who was located and arrested in British Columbia with the assistance of the RCMP Fugitive Return Program. Members of OPP’s East Region Bail Support Team and the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Crime Unit returned the individual to Ontario on March 5, 2025. 

As a result of this incident 26-year-old Dylan Shane ROBERTS is charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offences:

  • Dangerous operation causing death – Section 320.13(3) CC
  • Impaired operation causing death – Section 320.14(3) CC

The accused was held for a bail hearing on March 6, 2025, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke.

The investigation was conducted with the assistance of OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) and an OPP Collision Reconstructionist.

Gordon STEWART – Drunk Driving

(LAURENTIAN HILLS, ON) – A driver is facing Criminal Code (CC) charges after a two-vehicle collision in the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment area.

On February 9, 2025, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the UOV OPP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Laurentian Hills. Investigation found that a westbound pickup truck sideswiped an eastbound tractor trailer near Meilleurs Road. The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries. As part of the investigation a Roadside Screening Device was utilized, and the driver was transported to the detachment for further testing. 

As a result of this incident 79-year-old Gordon STEWART of Laurentian Hills has been charged with the following CC offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80mg plus

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke March 10, 2025.

Magdalena SLOMINSKI – Drunk Driving

(LAURENTIAN HILLS, ON) – A driver is facing Criminal Code (CC) charges after a single-vehicle collision in the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment area.

On February 9, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the UOV OPP responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Laurentian Hills. Investigation found that the eastbound vehicle lost control and collided with the guard rails near Josie Lane. The driver was not seriously injured. As part of the investigation a Roadside Screening Device was utilized, and the driver was taken into custody for further tests. Test results were more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit. Police also seized open alcohol from the vehicle.  

As a result of this incident Magdalena SLOMINSKI, age 30 of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, has been charged with the following CC offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80mg plus

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke March 3, 2025.

Ryan HAWLEY Was Arrested

(LAURENTIAN HILLS, ON) – An area resident is facing a driving-related Criminal Code (CC) charge after an investigation by members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). 

On the evening of January 9, 2025, police received information about a possible impaired driver in Laurentian Hills. Officers located the vehicle and driver in the Town of Chalk River and began an investigation.   

As a result of this incident 46-year-old Ryan HAWLEY of Laurentian Hills has been charged with failure or refusal to comply with demand contrary to the CC. The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on February 4, 2025.

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

Repeat Offender Matthew SHEA Arrested

(LAURENTIAN HILLS, ON) – An Ottawa man is facing four Criminal Code (CC) charges after a break-in and thefts from a gas station in Rolphton.

On October 7, 2024, at approximately 7:00 a.m., members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a gas station in Rolphton in Laurentian Hills after a break and enter was discovered. Entry had been made to the store and alcohol was stolen during the overnight hours. A short time later police located the suspect at a nearby motel and took them into custody. 

As a result of the investigation Matthew SHEA, age 39 of Ottawa, was charged with the following CC offences:

  • Break and enter a place – commit an indictable offence
  • Theft under $5000

The accused was released to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke at a later date.   

Later that morning, at approximately 10:15 a.m., police were called back to the gas station after it was reported that the accused had returned, and more alcohol was stolen.  

The accused was arrested again and further charged with the following CC offences:

  • Failure to comply with undertaking
  • Theft under $5000

The accused was held for a bail hearing, and subsequently released to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on November 18, 2024.

Terry Ross BERRYMAN Was Arrested Again

(LAURENTIAN VALLEY TWP, ON) – The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid charges against a Laurentian Valley Township resident after a recent break and enter.   

On August 13, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers from the UOV OPP responded to a report of a break, enter and theft at a residence on Sandy Beach Road in Laurentian Valley Township. Alcohol and fuel were reported stolen. An individual was arrested the following day.

As a result of this incident 60-year-old Terry Ross BERRYMAN of Laurentian Valley Township has been charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offences:

  • Break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Theft under $5000
  • Fail to comply with probation order – two counts

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on September 10, 2024.

Jason COCHRANE Facing Impaired Charge Following Collision

(LAURENTIAN HILLS TWP., ON.) – The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a driver with impaired after a collision. 

On August 12, 2024, just after 7:00 p.m., OPP received information regarding a collision on Main Street in Chalk River. Police located the driver who was not injured. During the course of the investigation a Roadside Screening Device was utilized. The driver of the vehicle was then transported to the detachment for further testing.

Jason COCHRANE, 39 years old, of Deep River was charged with impaired operation.

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused was released to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on September 10, 2024.
