Toronto-area men arrested on drug charges

Two Toronto-area men face drug charges following their arrests in downtown Guelph Thursday.

Members of the Guelph Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit began surveillance Thursday after one of the males was observed visiting an address known to be involved in the drug subculture. Several meetings consistent with drug trafficking were observed.

Approximately 4:20 p.m. officers approached two males as they left an address near Neeve Street and Howitt Street. The males ran in opposite directions but were both arrested following short foot pursuits.

Officers recovered quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, Percocet pills and more than $1,000 cash.

A 26-year-old Mississauga man and 26-year-old Brampton man are each charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing a controlled substance. They were both held for bail hearings Friday.

Knife pulled in downtown dispute

A Guelph man faces assault and weapons charges after a knife was pulled during a dispute downtown Thursday morning.

Approximately 6:20 a.m. police were called to the area of Carden Street and Macdonell Street. A woman reported she had confronted a male she believed stole some of her property, and he had pulled a knife which he pointed at her while uttering threats.

The male was still in the area and was arrested. A 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering death threats and three counts of breaching court orders. He will appear in bail court April 23.

Burnt-out lights lead to impaired charge

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after burnt-out lights on his car attracted an officer’s attention.

Just after 10 p.m. Thursday, an officer was patrolling on Waterloo Avenue when he spotted a vehicle with a headlight and licence plate light both burnt out. A traffic stop was conducted and the officer could smell alcohol on the driver’s breath.

After failing a roadside breath test the driver was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court May 7.

Stolen property recovered from storage units

A Guelph woman faces several charges after officers recovered a large amount of stolen property from two storage units and her vehicle.

In late March, members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit executed a search warrant at a storage unit in the south end. Officers recovered power tools which had been reported stolen three weeks earlier during a break-in to an east-end home under renovation.

The evening of March 27, a break-in attempt was reported at a residence on Stone Road East. It is alleged the female drove a male to that location for the purpose of committing an offence.

A female was arrested around noon Wednesday as she sat in the driver’s seat of a pickup at an address on York Road. A search of the pickup revealed a large amount of suspected stolen property including bicycles, tools, electronics and identity documents. Officers also seized approximately $1,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine, a digital scale and $3,500 in cash.

Later Wednesday, officers searched a storage unit in Fergus and recovered bicycles and other sports equipment, tools, electronics and copper wire.

A 26-year-old Guelph woman faces charges including break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and several counts of breaching court orders. She was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

Arrest after clerk assaulted

A Guelph man was arrested early Thursday after a clerk at a downtown business was assaulted.

Just before midnight Wednesday, police were called to a restaurant on Macdonell Street. A male who had earlier been removed from the business came back in and punched the clerk in the side of the face while his back was turned. The subject then went outside and used a sock filled with rocks to smash the front window, causing approximately $2,000 in damage.

Officers located a male nearby and arrested him. A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault, mischief under $5,000 and being intoxicated in public. He will appear in court May 31.

Thousands in cosmetics stolen

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after thousands of dollars in cosmetics were stolen from a north-end business.

Police were called Wednesday morning to a business near Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue West. A day earlier, two women entered the store and removed the products.

Both were described as being in their 30s with tanned skin. One had dark hair in a bun and was wearing a long black or dark grey coat or cardigan and black sneakers with white soles.

The second female – who was not seen removing product and appeared to be acting as the look-out – had a heavy build and dark hair in a high bun. She was wearing a grey sweater with a gold chain attached at the neckline, black pants and white sneakers. The total value of the stolen products was $3,700.

Alarm jammer dropped during theft attempt

A York Region couple face charges after someone dropped an alarm jammer while stealing thousands of dollars in product from a Guelph business.

Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West. A loss prevention officer had observed a male and female placing medication, fragrances and toiletries into backpacks stolen from the store. While attempting to leave the business the male dropped a jammer device used to prevent anti-theft alarms from sounding.

Officers arrested both parties, recovering more than $3,200 in stolen property.

Further investigation revealed they were also responsible for a similar theft at the same store in March during which nearly $4,400 worth of items were stolen.

A 25-year-old male and 25-year-old female, both from Maple, are charge with two counts each of theft under $5,000.

Toyota Tacoma stolen from driveway

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a Toyota Tacoma was stolen from the west end.

Approximately 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, a male reported his grey 2023 Tacoma pickup missing from his driveway near Stephanie Drive and Imperial Road South. The truck has a matching grey bed cap and fishing and hunting stickers on it.

Hammer wielded during food fraud

A Toronto man faces weapons and other charges after a man wielded a hammer to avoid paying a bar tab in Guelph.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, police were called to a downtown establishment. A man had tried to leave without paying his bill and was confronted by an employee. The man removed a hammer from his tool belt and held it over his head while saying he would not pay the bill.

Officers arrived a short time later and located the male nearby. A 30-year-old Toronto man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, food fraud and failing to comply with a release order. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court May 17.

Robbery charge after clerk assaulted

A Guelph man faces a robbery charge after a convenience store clerk was assaulted and had product stolen Monday.

Approximately 7:40 a.m. police were called to a business near Gordon Street and Wellington Street East. A male had asked for cigarettes before attempting to go around the counter to the employee area.

When the female clerk tried to stop him, the male shoved her and snatched the cigarettes from her hand. The clerk was not physically injured.

Officers responded minutes later and located the male nearby holding the stolen cigarettes. A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery and breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Teen hit by car then charged

A teenage girl got hit by a car and handed a ticket Monday morning.

Approximately 9:20 a.m. emergency services received a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at Victoria Road North and Eastview Road. A 17-year-old Guelph girl was transported to hospital for treatment of a minor head injury.

She was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with disobeying a Don’t Walk signal.

Driver charged after collision with fire truck

A driver was charged Monday afternoon after colliding with a fire truck.

Just before 4:30 p.m. police were called to Victoria Road North and Speedvale Avenue East where a Ford Escape collided with the emergency vehicle. The 18-year-old driver of the Escape sustained minor injuries.

The Escape driver was charged with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Knife pulled on bar staff

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a male armed with a knife lunged at the doorman of a Guelph business.

Approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday police were called to a business on Silvercreek Parkway South. A male had twice attended the business but was denied entry as he did not have any identification. He returned a third time, pulling out a knife and lunging at the staff member, who was able to move out of the way and was not physically injured.

The suspect fled on foot and was last seen running eastbound on Waterloo Avenue. He was described as a black male, 5’7” with a thin build and wearing a light-coloured windbreaker with dark shoulders, dark pants, a black baseball cap and a medical mask. While checking the area officers recovered a black knife with duct tape around the handle.

Man injured with explosive, arrested

A Guelph man is facing a criminal charge after he reportedly injured himself with an explosive device.

Sunday morning, police were called to Guelph General Hospital regarding a patient who was being treated for hand injuries. Investigation determined he had made a small explosive device, which went off and caused his injuries.

Through investigation officers located the suspected detonation location near the Eramosa River at the end of Waterworks Place. No other injuries were reported.

A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing an explosive device. He will appear in court May 24.

Three girls charged with robbery

Three teenage girls are charged with robbery after a fourth was beaten up and had her phone stolen Friday night.

Approximately 10:20 p.m. police were called to a business on Speedvale Avenue East. A 15-year-old girl reported she met up with another girl nearby, but then two other girls arrived and all three assaulted her by spitting on her, knocking her to the ground and kicking her. It is believed one of the girls recorded the assault.

The victim’s phone was taken and smashed on the ground before the assailants fled. The victim declined medical attention.

Three girls aged 17, 16 and 14 have been arrested and charged with robbery. They were released with court dates in May.

Driver arrested after fleeing collision

A Puslinch male faces dangerous driving and other charges after fleeing a collision in Guelph Friday evening.

Approximately 6:45 p.m. a woman was slowing for stopped traffic on Speedvale Avenue West at Edinburgh Road North when her car was struck from behind. The other driver then switched lanes, mounted a curb and drove across the grass before fleeing the scene.

Investigation led to the identity of a suspect. Shortly after midnight, police were called for a disturbance outside a Woodlawn Road West business. One of the males involved in a physical altercation was the driver from the earlier hit and run and he was arrested.

A 35-year-old Puslinch man is charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and driving while suspended. He will appear in court May 24.

Trespassing leads to criminal charges

Attempting to avoid a trespassing ticket led to criminal charges for a Guelph man who attempted to punch a police officer.

Approximately 3:15 p.m. Sunday a member of the Guelph Police Service was on foot patrol downtown when he spotted a male entering a business and knew him to be banned. The officer escorted the male from the business and intended to issue a ticket under the Trespass to Property Act.

The male became irate and tried to walk away. When the officer tried to stop him the male turned and attempted to punch the officer in the head. He was taken to the ground and arrested.

A 28-year-old Guelph man is charged with assaulting police and two counts of breaching a probation order. He will appear in court May 31.

Police looking for suspicious male

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a male was twice observed recording into a woman’s apartment.

Approximately 9:40 a.m. Thursday, a woman in her 30s reported a man outside her unit near Eastview Road and Starwood Drive who appeared to be recording through her bedroom and living room windows. She went outside with her dog and appeared to startle the man, who walked through a garden and entered another nearby building.

The complainant advised of a similar incident a month earlier during which a neighbour caught the male on video. He is described as Asian, approximately 60, 5’3” and wearing a grey sweater, black sweatpants and a baseball cap.

Tools stolen from garage

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after approximately $800 worth of tools were stolen from a residential garage Thursday evening.

Approximately 7:20 p.m., a resident of Waterloo Avenue near Alma Street South called police to report his neighbour had seen a male leaving the victim’s garage carrying power tools. The suspect was described as an older white male, approximately 5’8” and wearing a black and grey windbreaker, blue jeans and a blue backpack. He walked hunched over.

Tools including a saw, two drills and batteries were reported stolen.

Passed out male arrested for impaired

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after he was found Thursday morning passed out in a running vehicle.

Approximately 8:40 a.m. police were called to a plaza near Gordon Street and Wellington Street after staff of a business reported a male had been asleep in a vehicle for three hours.

Officers arrived and spoke to the male, who had poor concentration and slow movements. He was observed to be trying to hide a small baggie containing prescription tranquilizers.

The male was arrested and transported to the police station, where an officer trained in drug recognition determined the male’s ability to operate a vehicle was impaired.

A 22-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his father’s vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court May 21.

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after three young girls were approached Wednesday evening by a woman who offered them bicycles.

Just before 6 p.m., three 10-year-old girls were walking in the area of Delaware Avenue and Mohawk Drive when they were approached by a woman. She told the girls they were pretty and that she had new bicycles in her backyard they could have, pointing generally across the street. The girls continued walking to one girl’s house as the woman followed them.

The woman was described as white, approximately 30, tall and thin with blonde hair in a tight bun, missing teeth and a birthmark or tattoo over her right eye. She was wearing a dress or sweater and covered her eyes with her hands while she spoke.

Impaired arrest following collision

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving by a drug following a collision Wednesday morning.

Approximately 11:25 a.m. several witnesses called to report a parked vehicle being struck on Westwood Road. A Guelph Police Service officer on patrol came across the collision scene moments later and saw a man exit the suspect vehicle to observe the damage before getting back in and parking his car.

The officer spoke to the man, who was showing signs of impairment and appeared confused. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where an officer trained in drug recognition determined his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired.

Investigation revealed the man is prohibited from driving due to an earlier impaired driving conviction.

A 64-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 45 days. He will appear in court May 24.

Stolen truck recovered in Guelph

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a truck stolen from Breslau was recovered in the city’s south end.

Just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, the owner of the 2016 Volvo truck, which was reported stolen last Friday, called police to report it had been located at an address on Southgate Drive. It had a trailer attached which did not belong to the owner of the truck.

Teen arrested for robbery, assaults

A 13-year-old boy faces robbery and assault with a weapon charges following two separate incidents Tuesday evening.

Approximately 8:20 p.m. a man and woman were walking on Scottsdale Drive near Wilsonview Avenue when they were approached by two youths. One of the youths spat at the woman but missed.

After a brief exchange of words the victims became concerned due to the youths’ erratic behaviour and started to walk away. The same youth who had spat at them then began throwing rocks at the victims as they ran from the area.

Approximately 20 minutes later another adult male was walking in the area of Stone Road West and Scottsdale Drive when the same teen approached and asked for his shoes. The victim tried to ignore him and keep walking but was punched in the back of the head while the teen continued to demand his sneakers.

Officers arrived a short time later and arrested the suspect inside a nearby business where he had followed the victim.

A 13-year-old Guelph boy is charged with attempted robbery, assault with a weapon and two counts of assault. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

$10k in tools stolen from trailer

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after approximately $10,000 worth of tools were stolen from a trailer in the south end.

Tuesday morning, officers were called to an address on Southgate Drive. The victim reported he parked his trailer at a business overnight and returned in the morning to find the door had been pried open and his tools stolen.

Video surveillance showed two people arriving at the address approximately 4:25 a.m. in a dark blue Chevrolet Suburban. The tools were loaded into the SUV, which drove away a few minutes later. A similar Suburban was reported stolen from a north-end business during the same time period, but it is not known if the incidents are related.

Woman arrested following break-in

A Guelph woman has been arrested following a weekend break-in during which a large bowel movement was left in the victims’ toilet.

Just after 4 p.m. Saturday, police were called to a home on Edinburgh Road South. The owners had gone out approximately three hours earlier and came home to find several windows had been smashed.

Property including prescription medication, clothing, sunglasses and heirloom jewelry and coins were reported missing. The suspect also left behind property including clothing, boots and a credit card. Video surveillance captured the suspect leaving the home pulling a suitcase full of property.

On Tuesday officers on foot patrol downtown located a female wearing some of the stolen clothing. A search revealed stolen property including jewelry and coins.

A 22-year-old Guelph woman is charged with break and enter and possessing stolen property. She will appear in court May 24.

Impaired charge after Tesla rear-ended

A Guelph man faces an impaired driving charge after a Tesla was rear-ended while stopped at a red light Tuesday night.

Just before 10 p.m. police were called to Stone Road West and the Hanlon Expressway. The victim was stopped behind another vehicle when it was struck from behind, causing significant damage. No serious injuries were reported.

Officers arrived and spoke to the other driver, who had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and was showing clear signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle, which is registered to his girlfriend who was also present, was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court April 23.

Officer assaulted during arrest

A Guelph man faces several charges after spitting in the face of a Guelph Police Service officer Friday morning.

Approximately 11:30 a.m. police were called for a disturbance at an address near Willow Road and Dawson Road during which a woman was threatened and struck in the head with a coffee cup.

A man left the residence but returned a short time later and was placed under arrest. While being escorted to a cruiser, the man turned and spat at officers, hitting one in the mouth area.

A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon, assaulting police, theft under $5,000 and disobeying a court order. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court May 7.

Drug, weapons charge after arrest on warrant

A Guelph man faces several drug and weapons charges after being arrested for missing a court date.

Just before 1:30 p.m. Friday, officers patrolling downtown spotted a male known to be wanted for failing to appear in court in February. He was placed under arrest on the outstanding warrant, and a search revealed quantities of suspected crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, crack cocaine and hydromorphone pills, as well as cash, pepper spray and a spring-activated knife.

A 44-year-old Guelph man is charged with four counts of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a prohibited weapon, failing to appear in court and failing to comply with a release order. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.

House entered while owners out

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a home was entered Saturday while the owners had gone out.

Just after 4 p.m. police were called to a home near Edinburgh Road South and Waterloo Avenue. The owners had gone out approximately three hours earlier and came home to find several windows had been smashed.

Property including prescription medication, clothing and an Audi key fob were reported missing. The suspect also left behind property including clothing, boots and a credit card.

The stolen property is valued at approximately $500 to $1,000 while damage is estimated at $2,000 to $4,000.

Speeding leads to impaired charge

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after he was stopped for speeding early Sunday.

Approximately 1:10 a.m. a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit was conducting speed enforcement on Victoria Road North when he clocked a vehicle travelling 76 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the officer noted an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath.

After failing a roadside test the driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and speeding. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court April 26.

Robbery charge after staff assaulted

A Guelph woman faces a robbery charge after an employee of a north-end business was assaulted while trying to stop a shoplifter.

Saturday evening, an employee of a Woodlawn Road West business observed a woman concealing items in her purse and followed her as she attempted to leave the store. He stopped her as she was about to exit, but the woman punched him several times and fled on foot. The employee was not injured.

Officers located her walking nearby and placed her under arrest. A search of her property revealed approximately $170 worth of stolen property in her backpack.

A 47-year-old Guelph woman is charged with robbery. She will appear in court June 7.

Weapons charge after arrest on warrant

A Guelph man faces weapons and other charges after he was arrested Thursday on an outstanding warrant.Just after 8 a.m., Guelph Police Service officers were conducting foot patrols at an address on Woolwich Street near Speedvale Avenue. They located a male in a common area packing property into bags.Investigation determined the male was wanted for missing a court date last month. He was arrested following a brief foot pursuit and during a search officers located an open folding knife tucked into his shoe.A 54-year-old Guelph man is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, failing to appear in court and two counts of breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Friday. 

Hamilton woman arrested in Guelph break-in spree

A Hamilton woman facing more than a dozen charges related to a string of residential break-ins in Guelph last month has been arrested.On March 24, four residences in south Guelph were entered in the early morning hours while the owners were sleeping. An Audi SUV was stolen from one of the homes, and property from the Audi was later discovered near an abandoned Toyota SUV which had been stolen during a break-in at a Hamilton home.Members of the Guelph Police Break Enter Auto Theft Unit conducted an investigation that led them to a Hamilton address where two parties were observed in the stolen Audi. That information was passed onto Hamilton Police Service who continued the investigation. On March 27 members of the Hamilton Police Service stopped the vehicle and arrested the two occupants.A 30-year-old Hamilton man and 33-year-old Hamilton woman face a long list of charges in several jurisdictions.On Thursday evening the woman turned herself in to Guelph Police and was arrested for four counts of break and enter, four counts of wearing a disguise while committing an offence, theft of a motor vehicle, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and three counts of unauthorized use of a credit card. She was held for a bail hearing Friday.Her co-accused is still in custody in another jurisdiction and will eventually be returned to face the Guelph charges. 

Stolen pickup recovered in Guelph

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a stolen pickup was recovered in the north end.Wednesday evening officers were dispatched to the area of Eramosa and Hyland roads after a witness reported a suspicious vehicle.
