Fatal Collision

(GOULAIS RIVER, ON) – The Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is continuing their investigation into a fatal collision that occurred in Goulais River.

On May 19, 2025, at approximately 6:39 p.m., the Sault Ste. Marie OPP responded to a serious single-vehicle collision on Four Seasons Drive. A 31-year-old person from Goulais River was confirmed deceased at the scene, as a result of the collision.

Members of the North East Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (T.I.M.E.) team are assisting with the investigation.

Scott MACKENZIE Facing Numerous Charges

(GOULAIS RIVER, ON) – A vehicle driver who failed to properly stop for police is now facing multiple criminal and provincial charges. 

On February 24, 2025, at approximately 10:57 a.m., an officer with the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police was patrolling Highway 17 in Goulais River, when they observed a motor vehicle travelling on a portion of the road that was closed due to weather conditions. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however after initially pulling over, the vehicle then fled the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle and completed a tandem traffic stop, where the driver was arrested.

Investigation revealed the licence plates were stolen and did not belong to the stopped vehicle. Further investigation confirmed the vehicle was also reported stolen. In addition, the driver was found to have a suspended driver’s licence. 

As a result, Scott MACKENZIE, 49 years-of-age, of no fixed address, was charged with:

  • Dangerous operation
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 – two counts
  • Refusal to comply with demand
  • Fail to stop for police
  • Drive on closed highway
  • Disobey stop sign – fail to stop
  • Drive left of centre – on a curve
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Fail to surrender insurance card
  • Driving while under suspension

The accused was held for a bail hearing, and subsequently remanded into custody.

Jason HAMPLEMAN Threatens Animals With Firearm & Is Arrested Again!

(GOULAIS RIVER, ON) – A neighbour dispute escalated to criminal charges for one individual after police were called to a residence in Goulais River. On November 8, 2024, at approximately 11:17 p.m., officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police responded to a weapons occurrence on Robertson Lake Road. The complainant reported that their neighbour had threatened to shoot their dogs, then had approached them with a firearm.        

As a result of the investigation, Jason HAMPLEMAN, 31 years-of-age, of Goulais River was arrested and charged with:

  • Uttering threats – injure animal
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Failure to comply with release order

The accused was held for a bail hearing, and subsequently remanded into custody.

Parked Cruiser Involved In Collision

(GOULAIS RIVER, ON) – Police charge ATV operator with impaired.

On September 21, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Sault Ste Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for service at a residence on Sand Bay Road in Goulais River. 

While on route, police observed an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) approaching them with two occupants not wearing helmets and the driver holding a bottle of liquor. The operator attempted to evade police by approaching the parked cruiser, then quickly accelerating past. While doing so, the ATV struck the cruiser’s front bumper in attempting to make a righthand turn, thus causing loss of control and flipping into the ditch.

After speaking to the driver, police determined alcohol had been consumed and was therefore arrested. 

Orlando NAHWEGAHBOW, 25 years-of-age from Batchewana First Nation was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Dangerous operation
  • Failure to stop after accident
  • Fail to stop for police
  • Driver-no helmet or improper helmet
  • Litter highway

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste Marie on October 21, 2024.

The next day, September 22, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Orlando NAHWEGAHBOW contacted the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment regarding a property issue. While on the phone with the call taker, the accused threatened to attend the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment with a firearm to shoot all the officers there as well as the call taker. 

Later that day, the Sault Ste Marie Police Service (SSMPS) and the OPP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted a traffic stop on Bay Street and the accused was arrested again.

Orlando NAHWEGAHBOW, 25 years-of-age from Batchewana First Nation was charged with: Three counts of Utter Threats – cause death or bodily harm.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court on September 23, 2024.
