UPDATE: Canada Post presents new global offers to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers

Canada Post has presented new global offers to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), demonstrating a commitment to reach agreements and maintain continuity of postal services for your business and your customers.

The new offers, for the Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers) bargaining units, go further on wage increases and would protect employees’ benefits and entitlements.

The offers also reflect the Corporation’s current realities. Canada Post has proposed important changes to its delivery model to improve service and meet the changing needs of Canadians and Canadian businesses.

Bringing urgency to the negotiations

Canada Post and CUPW are negotiating at a critical moment for the postal system. Building on the important work of the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) and the findings and recommendations in its final report, the parties must now bring urgency to the negotiations. We recognize that another labour disruption would be costly and disruptive for employees, businesses and the millions of Canadians who rely on Canada Post.

As part of the company’s commitment to reach agreements, Canada Post has withdrawn some items since its last global offer. The company is no longer proposing a new health benefits plan, changes to employees’ post-retirement benefits, or enrolling future employees in the defined contribution pension instead of defined benefit.

Future employees, hired after the signing of the new collective agreements, will receive health and pension benefits after six months of regular employment.

Strike notices received

Canada Post has received strike notices from CUPW, indicating that the union intends to begin strike activity as of Friday, May 23 at 12:00 am local time, unless the parties reach agreements before then. Our operations continue as usual at this time.

In the event CUPW initiates rotating strike activity, Canada Post intends to continue delivering for your business while working to reach agreements. The Corporation will work to minimize service disruptions, but customers may experience delays.

We had hoped new agreements would be reached by this point and we know this ongoing uncertainty is challenging. Your business requires certainty and consistent, reliable service. We are doing everything we can to reach agreements and maintain delivery. This remains our priority.

We will continue to keep you informed so you can plan and prepare accordingly.

Canada Post receives strike notices from CUPW – customers should be prepared for possible service delays

Today, Canada Post received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), for both Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers) bargaining units. The notices indicate that CUPW intends to begin strike activity as of Friday, May 23 at 12:00 am local time, unless the parties reach agreements before then.

Our operations continue as usual at this time.

What you can expect

In the event CUPW initiates rotating strike activity, Canada Post intends to continue delivering in unaffected areas while working to reach agreements. We will work to minimize service disruptions, but customers may experience delays.

In the event of a national labour disruption, mail and parcels will not be delivered and no new items will be accepted until the disruption is over. All mail and parcels in our network will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once operations resume.

Following either a rotating strike or a national labour disruption, processing and delivery may take some time to fully return to normal.

The potential for another strike comes at a critical moment for the postal system. Since 2018, the Corporation has recorded more than $3 billion in losses before tax, and it will post another significant loss for 2024. In early 2025, the Government of Canada announced repayable funding of up to $1.034 billion for Canada Post to prevent insolvency.
