On Thursday, May 29, 2014 at around 5:30 p.m., a woman who resides on Kipps Lane, was forced back into her residence after answering a knock at her door. A male armed with a gun, accompanied by a female, demanded cash.

An undisclosed amount of cash was obtained and the two suspects fled the unit. No one sustained any injuries.

With the assistance of Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), two warrants were executed in Oshawa, Ontario on Friday, June 6, 2014 – one to a residence and the other to a vehicle. The suspect was located and arrested inside the unit.

As a result of the investigation, Jonathan Gingras, 27 years of Oshawa, Ontario, was transported to London where he was charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:
– armed robbery, contrary to section 343(d);
– using a disguise during the commission of an offence, contrary to section 351(2);
– carry a concealed weapon, contrary to section 90(1);
– using a firearm during a commission of an offence, contrary to section 85(1)(a);
– utter threats to cause death, contrary to section 264(1)(a);
– break and enter, contrary to section 348(1)(b); and
– forcible confinement, contrary to section 279(2).

The female suspect has not yet been identified.

The firearm was not located. Cash and other evidence were seized.

On Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 5:15 a.m., a serious collision occurred on Oxford Street West near Sanatorium Road involving a Dodge pickup truck and a Volkswagon sedan.

Danielle Schmoll, 19 years of Ilderton, has been identified as the driver of the sedan who was transported to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

A 46-year-old man from Mount Brydges was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision continues however charges are not anticipated in this case.

On Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 5:15 a.m., a serious collision occurred on Oxford Street West near Sanatorium Road involving a Dodge pickup truck and a Volkswagon sedan.

The male driver of the pickup truck was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The female driver of the sedan was extricated from the vehicle and transported to hospital in critical condition. She has since succumbed to her injuries. No further information will be released about her, at this time, as next of kin is being contacted and the cause of the collision is still being investigated.

There were no passengers in either vehicle. Oxford Street between Sanatorium Road and Kains Road is expected to be closed for the next couple of hours.

More information will be provided as the investigation progresses.

For approximately 20 years, members of the London Police Service have teamed up with Tim Hortons in an effort to support the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation.

In 2013, approximately 300 local kids (16,000 in North America) were able to take advantage of this program which supports kids who would not normally be afforded the opportunity to go to camp. For most, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them.

Each year, the first Wednesday in June is Tim Hortons Camp Day. Camp Day is the one day each year when Tim Hortons restaurant owners donate 100 per cent of the proceeds from coffee sales to the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation (THCF), making it the Foundation’s largest fundraiser each year.

This year, approximately 45 members including police officers, court prisoner security officers, cadets, and auxiliary officers will be volunteering their time at Tim Hortons around London. Let the men and women of the London Police Service serve you your coffee tomorrow, Wednesday, June 4, 2014!

Deputy Chief Brent Shea will be at the Tim Hortons located at Commissioners Road and Wonderland Road, starting at 10:30 a.m.

London motorists shouldn’t be alarmed tomorrow if they are stopped by an out of town police officer for a traffic violation. Officers from London will be partnering with officers from the surrounding four counties which include Stratford, Woodstock, Strathroy, St. Thomas and Aylmer, all in an effort to improve road safety.

The Four Counties Traffic Initiative is one that the London Police Service has been participating in for many years. There are several days throughout the year dedicated to the initiative where LPS Traffic Management Unit officers travel to other jurisdictions to assist in traffic enforcement. On Tuesday, June 3, 2014 Londoners will benefit from the initiative in this city.

Officers will travel throughout our city and will be directing their focus to those who are engaging in aggressive driving, distracted driving and those who are choosing not to utilize mandatory safety equipment.

June is also the month when we typically see warmer temperatures and an influx of pedestrian and bicycle traffic. With that in mind, the officers participating in Four Counties tomorrow will be specifically focused on the aforementioned offences as they relate to cyclists and pedestrians. In order to make our roadways safer we must all utilize and/or operate our chosen mode of travel in a cooperative manner.

On May 29, 2014 at 1:45 pm, the London Police Service was contacted by the Childrens’ Aid Society (CAS) of London and Middlesex requesting assistance in checking on the welfare of a child at a residence. Officers attended and met with the CAS worker.

It was determined that a 10-year-old child was locked in a bedroom for 18-24 months.

Two adults, the 10-year-old child’s aunt and uncle, have been charged with:
1) Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life, contrary to section 215 of the Criminal Code
2) Forcible Confinement, contrary to section 279(2) of the Criminal Code

The two accused have been released from custody with a court date of July 10, 2014.

The investigation is continuing. The London Police Service is not releasing the identity of the child’s guardians as that would identify the child.

On May 31, 2014 at approximately 4:00pm, the London Police were called to a parking lot at White Oaks Mall located at 1105 Wellington Road South, in regards to a 14 month old child locked in a vehicle with the windows rolled up.

Members of the London Police Service arrived and broke a window to retrieve the child who was transported to London Health Sciences Centre and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

One adult male is charged with Child Abandonment.

Police would like to remind the public to never leave a child unattended and to refrain from leaving children and pets in vehicles. Any member who observes someone in distress is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or 911.

On May 29, 2014 at 1:45 pm, the London Police Service was contacted by the Childrens’ Aid Society (CAS) of London and Middlesex requesting assistance in checking on the welfare of a child at a residence. Officers attended and met with the CAS worker. Finding the residence apparently unoccupied, they contacted the home owners and had them attend at the house. Upon their arrival, entry was made into the house and found inside was a 10-year-old male. The child is the nephew of the home owners. His aunt and uncle are his guardians. The child was found locked in a bedroom, living in filthy conditions. The child was apprehended by CAS and transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The investigation has determined that the child had been locked in the master bedroom for a period of 18 to 24 months. The master bedroom had an ensuite bathroom so the child had access to a toilet and shower however the room, and the entire house, was in squalid condition. At hospital, the child was diagnosed as being underweight and suffering from malnutrition. The child has been released from hospital and is in the care of the Children’s Aid Society.

A couple also has a biological child. That child has also been apprehended however there is no evidence at this time that that child had ever been locked in a room in the house.

Two adults, the 10-year-old child’s aunt and uncle, have been charged with:
1) Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life, contrary to section 215 of the Criminal Code
2) Forcible Confinement, contrary to section 279(2) of the Criminal Code

The tip to the Children’s Aid Society was received from a member of the public and was acted upon quickly by CAS. Neither the Children’s Aid Society nor the London Police Service had prior dealings with the occupants of the house or with anyone at that location. The Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex had brief contact with the family involving another older child who is no longer in the home, at another location, in 2007.

The investigation is continuing. The London Police Service is not releasing the identity of the child’s guardians as that would identify the child.
