Vehicle strikes fire hydrant affecting several homes on Arthur Street

A single motor vehicle collision on Arthur Street on May 23, 2014 caused extensive damage to a motor vehicle and several surrounding homes.

It is alleged that at 10:00 a.m. a 2009 Ford Escape being operated by a 53-year-old London man was travelling on Elizabeth Street, turning onto Arthur Street south. The driver failed to complete this turn, mounting the east curb, and striking a fire hydrant. The hydrant was knocked from the water main sending water onto Arthur Street.

City of Guelph Water Works employees worked quickly to close the main water feed, however a number of adjoining residences sustained water damage.

The driver of the Ford was not injured. Damage to the car and fire hydrant were estimated to be $6,500. A damage assessment of the homes affected by the water was unavailable.

The driver of the Ford is facing a charge of improper turn under the Highway Traffic Act.

This collision is under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the investigating officer Cst. Greg KAUT at 519-824-1212 ext. #7480
