(HOWICK, ON) - Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging drivers to take extra caution for horse-drawn vehicles when travelling throughout the county following another crash in the area involving a horse & buggy.

This crash is the second horse-drawn vehicle crash reported to Huron County OPP in just over a month. On Sunday, April 14, 2019 at approximately 5:19 p.m. Huron OPP officers along with Huron County Paramedic Services and Howick Fire Department responded to the intersection of Gorrie Line and Howick-Turnberry Road north of Gorrie to investigate a pickup truck and horse-drawn vehicle crash.

As a result of the police investigation officers have since learned a 20-year-old male driver of a pickup truck came to a stop at the intersection of Gorrie Line and Howick-Turnberry Road however when he proceeded into the intersection he failed to yield to a horse-drawn vehicle that was that was travelling westbound on Howick-Turnberry Road.

The pickup truck struck the horse-drawn vehicle that had six occupants in at the time of the crash. One of the occupants included an 8-month old boy. He was ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway. He was transported from the scene to an area hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The other occupants received minor injuries.

Drivers using roadways in rural parts of southwestern Ontario should expect to encounter slow moving vehicles such as horse-drawn vehicles and farm equipment on the road. They are common users of the road and have a right to be on the roadway.

Be courteous, be cautious, always stay alert and share the road. Road safety starts with you - please do your part.
